Cima Star's Personal Picks
I love good food in all its permutations, from street-side hot dogs to Parisienne haute cuisine. In this column, I'll give you my latest passions, adding to them from time to time, subtracting one if it should hit a downward slide.[Most of the emails about my restaurant reviews are gratifying, telling me about a lovely evening at a place I recommended. Then there are those that comment on what a “cushy” job it must to be go around gobbling delicious food all the time. And those that wonder why I never say anything terrible about a restaurant. “Do you get kickbacks from everybody you review,” one asked. Many people ask why I don’t review more restaurants! So let me tell you a bit about the reviewing process. I eat a lot of meals. Many are mediocre to occasionally downright awful. I never write about them. I know full well that even a fairly good place can have a bad night for any of dozens of reasons. Usually, unless I’ve heard a lot of raves about the place, however, I’m not willing to go back and take the chance of suffering through another tasteless experience.
So the job isn’t so easy, and I simply prefer to ignore the places that don’t cut the mustard. I stick to writing reviews about places that are above average, or very good or excellent. Sometimes, it takes a while to find one. Occasionally, I get a run of luck, and come across several in a row that are absolutely lovely.
Above all, I try to give my readers a good grasp of what they’re going to get, how good it is going to be, and the overall ambiance. So keep up the email and I’ll always try to answer individual questions.]
