It’s the pulled pork that first blew me away at Blowin’Smoke. Years ago, at a small roadside stand along the interminable drive across Texas, I’d eaten a pulled pork sandwich that, till now, rendered all others inferior. But this smoky, woodsy, porky platter at Blowin’ Smoke met the challenge and put a contented smile on my face..

Along with the pork, I tried a side of Cole slaw. Another winner, this is light and delicate, yet filled with robust cabbage flavor. And sampled the creamy Mac and Cheese, another tasty delight. The best of the sides proved to be, for me, the three-cheese spinach. This is creamed spinach as creamed spinach should be: heartily spinach in flavor, luxuriously cheesy and creamy. All of the platters come with a choice of two sides and cornbread.

Warily, I tried the fried pickle appetizers. I’d never eaten a fried pickle. The idea seemed aberrant. But I was surprised. The combination of the parmesan-lemon pepper breading and the frying itself, subdues the vinegar flavor of these little morsels, providing a unique savory and mellow taste treat.

A friend’s half smoked chicken, marinated in seasonings, dry-rubbed then smoked, resulted in a truly juicy, tender chicken. Her onion rings, breaded lemon-pepper crumbs, were thin, fresh tasting and too good, I think, to gild with the smoky ranch dressing (itself excellent) served with them.

Another friend had the top-notch black bean chili, mildly spiced and topped with cheddar.

The cheddar-jalapeno cornbread, served with all the platters proved good, though a bit dry for my taste.

Overall, Blowin-Smoke is darn smokin’ good, although the sides seem a little skimpy for their price tag of $2.99. -- CS
