It’s been a few years now since the brightly colored umbrellas and shining lights of Queeny’s lit up Habersham St., transforming the neighborhood. Queeny’s has been a beacon ever since for those of us who like good, affordable food in a cheerful, casual, mostly al fresco atmosphere. The place is so addictive; in fact, I start getting edgy if I miss more than a few days.
So when they closed for a well-deserved 6-week summer hiatus, many of us felt like the Dog Days of Summer had taken on a new, desolately profound meaning. When they re-opened, it looked like tout Savannah was there! My ongoing favorite special, usually served on Wednesdays, is Shrimp and Grits, beautiful, plump, sweet shrimp in a ham flavored or sometimes tomato based gravy over the creamiest grits in town. The regular menu—Fried Chicken, Fried Grouper, Crab Cakes, Pork Tenderloin, BBQ plate among others—is savory and lavishly portioned. For me at least, dinner at Queeny’s always equals a delicious lunch taken home for the next day. Everything comes with a choice of two or three of their many sides, among them a luscious corn puddin’, creamy, savory Mac and cheese, tomatoes and okra and a delightful cucumber and onion vinaigrette. Of course, appetizers, sandwiches, salads, and baskets abound. All good, all freshly made. The Empanadas, Fried Green Tomatoes and Smokin’ Pot Stickers are my favorites among the appetizers. I love all the salads, especially the Chef JHBIII chef salad, filled with all manner of goodies tucked amongst the freshest of greens. The desserts, made fresh every day, are sinful and among the best in the city. Tiramisu and the Italian Crème Cake are my own favorites, and when they have it, their Bread Pudding is a little bit of heaven. Neighborhood cafes just don’t get any better than this.
